About

Michael Austin Sorrells was born and raised in Dallas, TX where the guitar tones are as dry as the hot sun that beats down on your neck during the summer months. Inspired by artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, he picked up a guitar for the first time at 15-years-old, and began filling the years with enlightenment.

At high school he formed two duos. Last July, with Matthew Whitehead on guitar and vocals, was known for its acoustic pop sound and original songs. Gaia, with Ian Maclin on drums and background vocals, was known more for psychedelic rock and groovy jams. Both duos performed at venues in Deep Ellum, part of the local music scene in Dallas. All through high school they played at many local clubs and competed in a few ‘battle of the bands’ competitions, none of which they won.

At the time, Dallas’s local music scene was filled mostly with hardcore rock and heavy metal bands, which actually helped the duos stand out from the others. Purposely trying to be different was their kind of ‘thing’, and fans appreciated that. Being the front man was no problem for Michael, although he preferred being surrounded by close friends playing their best for him. They forced him to be better. He enjoyed sharing the spotlight so that it was more about them and less about him.

When both duos fell apart towards the end of high school, Michael decided to become a solo artist. Through a friend he was introduced to engineer/producer Dustin Hendrix (Chapter 11) and began recording his first album of eleven original songs at WarRoom studios in Sherman, TX. The CD was never released.

In 2013, as a freshman at The University of Alabama, he connected with manager Chuck Rhodes. Chuck introduced him to Danny Owen and Dell Little at PEP Ventura Studios in Irving, TX. Michael recorded three songs that were released as a taste of what was to come. In Nashville, TN Chuck introduced Michael to Sonic Sorbet Productions, a company owned by Beeb Birtles (Little River Band) and Bill Cuomo (Kim Carnes, Steve Perry). The three of them wrote and recorded seven songs that became Michael’s début EP, “Dancing In The Sky”, which was released on October 14, 2014.

In May 2016, Michael graduated from the University of Alabama and moved to Nashville to be closer to his co-writers and producers. The trio of Michael, Beeb and Bill continue to write and record on a weekly basis. They completed four new songs soon to be released to the public. Michael describes his musical direction as blues, rock, soul, and oldies.
